Contracts Aplenty |
After another low key off-season the Bengal’s have almost rounded out their roster requirements after stage one of Free Agency. Prior to the draft the only move we made was to add the young talent of Raymond Pierce to their offensive line. After struggling the past couple of seasons with a solid right tackle to protect the weak side Pierce was hoped to be the man to grow into the spot. After a rookie season with no playing time for the eagles we see him as a player with great base tools for his age (22) and potential to develop very quickly into the road block we need.
During the draft we focused in the same area, adding 2 more, young o-lines with Chad Lopez and Tom Dudley. With age hitting our interior lineman along with the merry-go-round at right tackle these extra young options may provide the permanent solution we require. FS Robbie Sellers was also retained after signings due to some impressive physical skills. Overall the draft provided nothing spectacular for us but time may provide us with some decent players.
Free Agency opened with a number of targets for the team. With roster spots to fill plus numerous discarded older stars we had quite a number of options to pursue. Surprisingly we landed 2 big OT’s in Lorenzo Lewis and Curtis Boone. The Bengal’s organisation has pursued both these players over the course of their careers and only now when their teams scrap them can we add their experience and size to our roster. With the young additions this off season to the O-line there is sure to be some competition and shuffling across the board. Amongts 4 other new members is Neil Cross, who joins our DT’s as a long term player for the team as his mobility is highly regarded for that role. He has taken a 7 year deal with the team but may see limited playing time at this point. SS Timmy Tyson, TE Shaun Sabbatini and HB Emmitt Wright join us as short term veteran depth at their respective positions. Solid backups in their own right after successful careers, Wright and Sabbatini are likely to see the field to rest starters or in multiple position sets. Tyson is likely to pop up on defense occasionally with an impact stat.
With still more roster spots to fill we will remain active until the completion of the UFA period as we seek to retain our division crown and make further headway into the playoffs. |

Cincinnati Unshakes Washington |
After the Redskins were calling to shake things up against the playoff conetneders in the last couple of rounds they were sorely beaten by a strong Bengals outfit. Solid all round performances on both sides of the ball saw the Bengals stop the Skins from opening up to score whilst still putting the ball to best use down the field into the endzone. Leftwich had his second best outing for the year, staying interception free and only planting his butt to the turf once. Wifall ran consistantly with a lack of big games to keep the clock ticking over. Dunta Robinson once again proved his worth to us by picking off a pass for a TD return. Rookie DE Jeff Swanson continues to increase his sack count, making it 9 for the year and a promising start for the youngster.
Next week is crunch time once again for us as we face the other playoff competitor in the Chargers. We need a win to avoid any sort of tie break situation...that or losses to both the Bills and Patriots.
NB. In only 6 games since acquiring him, C Lionel Madison has accumulated 59 pancakes. Not bad for a center and if he's lucky he could almost make the minimum bonus progression mark next week |

AFC North Reversal of Fortunes |
After 2 weeks played the AFC North looks like its been turned on its head. After years of dominance by Mike Group and his Ravens it seems all his wheeling and deling of the offseason is paying a toll. Its not like we are dellusional here as we know he'll get the chemistry right soon, but for now we relish in his 2 game losing streak to start the year. most suprising comes this weeks loss to the Steelers, the basement dweller of the division in many previous years. Right now we have the Bengals on top at 2-0, Steelers second with 1-1, followed by the Browns then Ravens who are both winless for a change.
As for our performance we have seen the team perform on both sides of the ball, forcing turnovers and minimising our own mistakes, resulting in a productive and scoring offense. A couple of key picks this week helped keep the Broncos scoreless in the second half and set us up with good field position to push or a score.
We'll be tested next week as we take on the Ravens in their territory and strive to keep their purple butts on the bottom of the table. |
