Packers Offseason Transactions Update |
Hey all you football fans out there. It's the new GM of the Packers here to summarize everything that has gone down so far in his first offseason. Will be updated as the draft goes along (and yea, I know I made some stupid picks, I'll be working on that in the future).
Trade #1:
Packers get -
WR Lamar Reid
CB Deion Vance
FS Akeem Lott
Seahawks get -
CB Corey Stewart
Corey Stewart is a fantastic young CB, but I still really like this trade. I got a very good replacement, a new starter at FS, and a young WR that will be useful in the near future as I start to phase out my very good but pretty darn old WR's.
Trade #2:
Packers get -
SS James Kendall
Vikings 7th round draft pick
Vikings get -
Packers 4th round draft pick
Maybe not the smartest trade ever, but with the way I've been drafting it doesn't look too bad in my opinion. Kendall is only 24 and is an amazing tackler with enough speed and acceleration to stay with some guys.
Draft picks (will update the rest as they come) :
Pick 1.4 - HB Leonard Bundy
Pick 3.1 - QB Paul Figgins
Pick 3.4 - CB Otis Farmer
Pick 5.4 - RE Wendell Dutton
Bundy, with ~90 BTK rating and decent enough speed/agility/acceleration, is a great power back on a team that doesn't really need one. Not to mention his crappy injury rating that I didn't really notice before the draft. Figgins, with his solid THP and THA (and bad awareness), is a solid 21 year old QB on a team that already has 3 that are better. Farmer, a short, relatively quick, and decent tackling CB, is 21 years old and will likely be a decent contributer at that spot at some point but is pretty much burried at the moment. At least they are all from some of my favorite colleges (Oregon, Utah State, and Texas A&M).
Pretty happy with Dutton, the DE I picked up in the 5th round. Not spectacular, but he's decent at everything a DE needs to succeed.
So what have I learned so far? Don't base anything on overall rating. If you do, you'll get stuck with 3 players who are pretty good but not a big need for the team. Be at the draft is a good one too. Or at least make a decent big board. But hey, I'm new, I'm still learning. Eventually, I'll totally figure this stuff out. Until then, I'll just ask for help when I need it from some of you guys who know what you are doing.
By the way, we need a better way of doing big boards. It's a pain to keep clicking on those arrows. |

Daniels' Role Could Change |
The Bye week usually provides a rest for players and a chance for coaches to assess the season's progress.
This week you could find Quarterback Jared Daniels in the film room disecting game film with veteran Ben Roethlisberger, rookie QB Adrian Emanuel, and coach McCarthy instead of relaxing in his dining room enjoying a late breakfast with his wife.
In a pair of games when the Packers needed Daniels to turn in his best work, he was sub-par. Against the Vikings and the Raiders he was 27 for 73 (36.9%), 2 td's, 2 int's, and sacked 7 times.
"I realize his back was against the wall in both of those games due to defensive mis-haps," said coach McCarthy in this weeks press briefing, "but I need consistency and reliability when the fire gets hot. We have a stretch of mid-season games that are very win-able. If my quarterback does not deliver consistency and reliability over the next three games, we will be facing a very challenging uphill battle to finish this season strong."
There is strong speculation that Daniels could lose his starting role if practice does not go well next week. |

If There Ever Was an Deciding Game… |
This game is it.
That’s what Head Coach Mike McCarthy insinuated at Friday’s after-practice press briefing. “This game against Oakland is the gateway to our mid-season stretch. Yes, we need to focus on one game at a time, but if we are serious about making the playoffs, the way we play this game will set the tone.”
The Raiders are chasing San Diego for the top position in the AFC West and may apply more pressure if the Chargers struggle against the enigmatic Jaguars. Both teams see a win this week as crucial in keeping pace with the unexpected TWR division leaders Vikings and Chargers.
When asked whether a victory is a necessity, McCarthy responded with a dead stare and said “No one takes a week off in this league. Listen, if I controlled how things played out, here’s how it would go. First, my corners will not get de-pantsed by the Oakland receivers in the first half. Second, my running backs would put 125 on the ground, my passing game would have 250 in the air, and we’d hit over 40% on third downs. And third, we’d win by at least four points. I seriously doubt Kiffin feels the way I do so he’s probably not going to hand the W to me.”
All Packer Nation will be watching this one to determine how cold the winter will be on the Tundra.
According to most experts, Oakland is a heavy favorite. Dissenters counter that it’s still too early to evaluate this team. |

Packer 2017 Draft Report |
Here are scrolling updates on Packer draft activity. All numbers are now Post-Skew
1.2 HB Byron Swan 6’2, 261, 24 yr old, 88 SPD, 82 STR, 85 AGI, 96 ACC, 86 BTK
University of Arizona
It was common knowledge this beast of a runner would be one of the first ten players drafted, but experts struggled with how Swan’s history of injury will affect his play in TWR. All critics love his (pre-skew) 87 SPD, 80 STR, 98 ACC, 82 CAR, and 86 BTK, but 62 INJ and 65 TGH have most concerned.
“Swan will need to run the ball twenty to thirty times a game and should something like an in-grown toe nail or athlete’s foot take hold, he could be out 2 to 3 weeks,” said draft expert Kel Miper. “I think that problem is a real possibility and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Packer organization puts back-up measures in place.”
Other football experts point out that Hall of Fame-bound Rashard Nealy and Buccaneers’ thousand yard rusher Isaiah Charles have faced similar challenges. “I’m sure Isaiah Charles has his feelings hurt all the time playing for GM Roberts,” said one anonymous GM. Also, opponents will have to prepare their defenses differently because Swan may be on the field and that will help Green Bay improve their record.
“Only time will tell if Green Bay has completely torched the beginning of this draft,” says Miper.
2.2 QB Adrian Emanuel 6’4, 219, 21 yr old, 66 AWR, 84 ACC, 90 THP, 84 THA
University of Houston
The Packers continue to baffle their fans and nearly all experts. After releasing veteran quarterbacks Greg Hampton and Thomas Millen, who’s currently being investigated by the FBI, there is no depth at the position. Instead of drafting someone who is ready to play now, they select a third-year sophomore who should have fallen to the mid rounds due to his lack of playing experience. It’s one thing to draft phenom QB Andre Ware out of Houston and get torched; this decision is made solely on Emanuel’s pro day and interview.
“We actually had him targeted for our 3.2 pick, but soon realized he would not fall that far. We could not wait until the 2.14 pick because the Vikings, who need a quarterback, have 3 picks between our 2.2 and our 2.14,” said Packer president Ted Thompson. “We had to go early if he was going to be a Packer. We think his arm strength is good, his 83 ACC is key to get his feet set before pressure arrives and the fact that he is 5 years younger than starter Jared Daniels gives us plenty of time to develop him.”
In response to the explanation, a befuddled Kel Miper stated “I give up. I have no idea what that team is doing! For all I know, they’re calling the now defunct Psychic Friends Network for draft guidance.”
2.14 CB Gerald O’Donnell 5’10, 177, 21 yr old, 96 SPD, 68 AWR, 85 AGI, 96 ACC
University of Pittsburgh
A Green Bay veteran wasn’t surprised that Packer scouts rank “Sense of Humor” highly on their interview criteria. “With all the losing we do around here, you’ve got to laugh about SOMETHING,” he said. The need to laugh-off the most recent loss shouldn’t be as necessary this new season say most football experts as many have pegged the Packers to hit around .500.
The new rookie corner does bring a dose of humor to the locker room. “I’ve heard them all,” said CB O’Donnell. When asked for clarification, he responded Jerry O’Connell jokes. I don’t have a clue who this guy is and yet anyone over 40 years old chuckles when they say my name.”
O’Donnell brings the skills to be a healthy competitor for the Nickel job and will be ready to consider the starting position after a couple seasons are under his belt.
3.2 DT Mario Tillman 6’3, 301, 23 yr old, 61 SPD, 89 STR, 70 AGI, 80 ACC
University of Notre Dame
Many scouts were enamored with Tillman since his junior year, but a high ankle sprain in the 3rd game of his senior season limited his production the rest of the season. He graduated with his degree in Philosophy in December and has been prepping for his rookie start in TWR ever since.
“There are bigger linemen and there are stronger linemen in this draft, but Tillman provides the best blend of speed, strength, acceleration, and most of all, agility, in this class,” said Kel Miper. “I will be surprised if he doesn’t get a good chunk of starts this season. He needs to begin development now.”
4.2 LOLB Eugene Woodson 6’2, 247, 23 yr old, 82 SPD, 75 AWR, 81 AGI, 84 ACC
Hofstra University
Occasionally a school produces a kid who has FOOTBALL running through his blood and then they don’t have a big-time prospect for another year or two.
Hofstra product Eugene Woodson is that kind of prospect.
“When they called me up, I didn’t even think they HAD a football program,” said Woodson, “All I knew was that Hofstra gets a lot of noise when they get into March Madness.” Woodson received some attention from Syracuse and University of Buffalo but decided on Hofstra to stay closer to home.
“He doesn’t break into the top 10 linebackers in this class, but he has ambition and he has drive. That is something he has to have to make a difference at this level,” said draft analyst Kel Miper. “Another thing: it looks like Green Bay finally has their head on straight during the middle of this draft. Let’s hope they don’t blow it on the final lap.”
5.2 LE AC Anderson 6’3, 266 lb, 21 yr old, 78 SPD, 71 STR, 66 AGI, 83 ACC, 69 TAK
Arizona State University
“Our goal at this point was to take the best defensive end available, and I think we succeeded,” said advisor Ted Thompson.
Outside of his fiery temper, nobody will label Anderson a bruiser. He’s basically an oversized OLB that runs best in a straight line. “He runs pretty fast and pretty hard, but don’t ask him to change direction much,” said Kel Miper. “Between you and me, I think the concerns about his off-field issues are overblown. Really, should anybody be upset that he takes paintball shots at skinheads in Tucson? Bet those baldy-welts were hilarious….. Oh crap, am I still mic’d???”
6.2 QB Curtis Mitchell 6’4, 219, 23 yr old, 69 AWR, 67 ACC, 88 THP, 91 THA
University of Utah
Entering his junior football season, Mitchell played with a chip on his shoulder. He led Utah to an undefeated season to be denied, again, an invitation to the National Championship game the season before. Caught too often trying to force the ball into windows that should not have been considered, he ended up with double-digit INT’s and his draft stock dropped from a clear 3rd rounder to a second day value.
“I thought I was taking reasonable risks, but looking back at game tape I should have chosen differently at times,” said Mitchell. “I know that nobody is giving me a chance to be a starter in TWR, but I’m working to prove the skeptics wrong and keep my head on straight.”
Many experts thought he would have gone undrafted or unsigned if some teams didn’t need to add quarterback depth.
“He’s a gamble but TWR has some amazing stories and who knows, we could be watching a Hallmark Channel special on the career of Curtis Mitchell someday,” chuckled Miper.
Both the 7.2 and 7.28 selections were not signed to the team |
