A source close to the Minnesota Vikings has told Yahoo Sports' Chris Mortensen the Vikings have finalized a deal with unrestricted free agent fullback Sammy Koch, and are potentially negotiating with more.
Terms of the contract were not yet released, but it is believed to be a two year agreement:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Minnesota Vikings sign::
FB, Sammy Koch -- 2 years / ? million total / ? million guaranteed
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The Vikings spoke this offseason of making a commitment to bolstering a running attack that already features Walt Odom and Cedric Triplett. Last year those two backs combined for 3,545 total yards, 4.5 YPC, and 20 TDs. Obviously they won't be on the field at the same time so those numbers will be halved, but the potential for production is huge.
One thing GM Anthony Fernandez felt has been desperately missing since he arrived 5 years ago was a fullback. Team insiders report the team has tried to move and acquire a power blocking fullback numerous times, but deals have always fell through. With the release of veteran DeJuan Dickerson last week, team officials clearly had something planned and it came in the form of Koch, who has played sparingly since 2015, but not because of talent.
He was simply being held hostage by the Oakland Raiders organization. After trying to acquire him a few times in the past few years (but scoffing at the Raiders request of 1st or 2nd round picks -- depending on the years inquired), the Vikings had finally cracked and made the phone call to offer once again for the veteran blocker. This time they offered a 4th Round Pick, but were willing to discuss players as well. We have obtained an exclusive copy of the reply they got from the Raiders organization...
[quote:a48e2fe4b1="P_Harbinger"]We didn’t resign him, go after him in free agency. |
Ah, music to the ears of a General Manager aiming to construct a prolific rushing attack to counterbalance the loss of TWR greats like Dave Bronson or Ben Sanders. The Vikings put their money where their mouth is, and now hopefully have a lead blocker for the next three years at least. Should they be concerned about "if he still has it" after sitting for three years? Well we will say this... HB Grant Henderson in Oakland hasn't got a sniff of 2,000 yards since Koch has been benched.
The Vikings are in discussions with a few other guys, but Koch was their primary target this free agency.

BACK2SCHOOL:: Vikings complete mandatory rookie minicamp. |
BACK2SCHOOL:: Vikings complete mandatory rookie minicamp.
Wednesday, September 30th, 2019
The Vikings got their results back for their first rookie minicamp and here are some notes from the scores::
----------------------------------
1.17 -- NT, Brent Carter, Troy State
| STR | AWR | ACC | TAK | | Pre-Camp: | 99 | 74 | 82 | 74 | | Post-Camp: | 97 | 72 | 82 | 76 |
Measurables -- 21 yrs old, 6'5", 343 lbs
Mortenson's Take -- Not bad considering the thing that got him drafted (size) can not be skewed. His strength and awareness were a tad lower than the Vikings thought when they drafted him, but luckily those are the two areas will be non-factors considering strength will max itself out still and awareness is one of the quickest progressing attributes.
----------------------------------
2.17 -- OT, Calvin Gross, Texas A&M
| STR | SPD | ACC | AGI | PBK | RBK | | Pre-Camp: | 85 | 52 | 96 | 56 | 88 | 81 | | Post-Camp: | 87 | 53 | 98 | 57 | 88 | 80 |
Measurables -- 21 yrs old, 6'5", 312 lbs
Mortenson's Take -- More than the club could ever ask for. The Vikings took a gamble passing on Gabe Ambrose in the 1st to secure their NT for the future, and they were thankful that Gross was still around. He now is looking a lot like the Jets' LT Nipper, and club officials think he will have a great career. Expect him to start at LT from day one.
----------------------------------
4.4 -- ROLB, Marcus Cameron, Stanford
TRADE ADDITION (via the Green Bay Packers for SS James Kendall and [7.17])
| SPD | ACC | AGI | CTH | STR | TAK | AWR | | Pre-Camp: | 85 | 81 | 84 | 65 | 71 | 73 | 68 | | Post-Camp: | 85 | 83 | 83 | 67 | 72 | 71 | 70 |
Measurables -- 21 yrs old, 6'4", 257 lbs
Mortenson's Take -- Turned into a very nice prospect. Should push for some reps and even get some first-off-the-bench playing time on a linebacking core that has had a few injuries the last few years. Don't expect MLB Dutton to be the first relief on the outside like he has been, likely relegated to just backup inside duty.
----------------------------------
4.17 -- QB, Tiki Carter, Air Force
| AWR | THP | THA | | Pre-Camp: | 77 | 91 | 81 | | Post-Camp: | 77 | 91 | 82 |
Measurables -- 21 yrs old, 6'4", 221 lbs
Mortenson's Take -- No surprises, which I think is what you want from a 4th round quarterback. Carter has the tools, we will see what the Vikings can make of him in a crowded stable of gunslingers.
----------------------------------
4.29 -- SS, Timmy Turner, Kansas
TRADE ADDITION (via the Arizona Cardinals for TE Josh Clay)
| SPD | ACC | TAK | CTH | | Pre-Camp: | 89 | 88 | 83 | 67 | | Post-Camp: | 88 | 89 | 84 | 68 |
Measurables -- 21 yrs old, 6'3", 228 lbs
Mortenson's Take -- While a bump up in speed could have made this the steal of the draft, he still remains a real nice prospect and could find his way onto the field in a crowded secondary. Has good enough quicks, great hands and is already a versed tackler... all traits that lead to big numbers in TWR.
----------------------------------
6.17 -- CB, Jason Dudley, Montana
| SPD | ACC | AWR | TAK | CTH | | Pre-Camp: | 92 | 91 | 64 | 75 | 60 | | Post-Camp: | 91 | 92 | 66 | 76 | 62 |
Measurables -- 21 yrs old, 5'8", 185 lbs
Mortenson's Take -- He is a small guy, but he showed improvement on a lot of his attributes, so that will give him a leg up on making the roster. He may prove to be too small to contribute, but is at least a solid enough tackler to develop as a special teams player. Overall, a decent pickup this late in the draft.

TRADE:: WEATHER VANE – Vikes add another north/south runner. |
TRADE:: WEATHER VANE – Vikes add another north/south runner.
Wednesday, September 30th, 2019
A source close to the Minnesota Vikings has told Yahoo Sports' Chris Mortensen the Vikings have finalized a deal with the Seattle Seahawks that is waiting league approval. The deal will be finalized this offseason.
The terms of the deal are as follows:
----------------------------------
Minnesota Vikings send::
2nd round pick [MIN 2019]
Seattle Seahawks send::
HB, Cedric Triplett
4th round pick [SEA 2019]
----------------------------------
In an offseason that saw Dave Bronson and Ben Sanders (#1 and #3 leading receivers all-time) retire, the Vikings may be gearing up for another offensive approach. The Vikings have acquired Cedric Triplett from the Seattle Seahawks to become the #2 back in Minnesota. Fresh off the heels of a 1,948 net yard, 13 total TD performance by should-be rookie of the year Walt Odom, the Vikings will look to get more production out of the guy coming onto the field when Odom needs a break, or if an injury were to occur.
Antoine Wells is a small, speedy back that didn't do horrible with his 43 touches last year, but he also didn't do enough to convince the Vikings they can lean on him with the reality of a greatly increased workload from the rushing attack. Without the veteran receivers on the outside, the Vikings will look to pound teams and should realistically only be throwing in games when they are behind, a play style which favors their small, faster wide receivers on deep streak routes.
Moving down two rounds in next year's draft is not something the Vikings are thrilled about, but this year's draft proved the draft is deep enough to find real talent through the first six rounds. In fact, more than a few teams traded a 2nd round pick THIS year for a 3rd round pick NEXT year straight up, without even getting a player to the caliber of Triplett. Could he end up being an expensive decoration... a curtain... a weather vane? Sure, but in a league where an entire season can change with one little injury, the Vikings are happy to have a biggish 4.0-5.0 YPC potential insurance policy.

Draft Daze:: Reviewing the Vikings Draft Weekend. |
Draft Daze:: Reviewing the Vikings Draft Weekend.
Friday, September 25th, 2019
It has been an unusually quiet offseason in Minnesota, but the draft was not without some fun and fireworks. Here are a few of the new Viking additions and our thoughts at Yahoo Sports::
----------------------------------
1.17-- NT, Brent Carter, Troy State
Key Stats -- 21 yrs old, 6'5", 343 lbs, ~99 STR, ~82 ACC, ~74 AWR, ~74 TAK
Team Role -- Nose Tackle Rotation
Mortenson's Take -- Carter will be groomed to eventually replace Anthony Shields when he retires. While he is not perfect, he was the biggest, strongest, quickest tackle in the draft and the Vikings could not pass on adding him to the roster. The team attempted to move up to grab him, but were thrilled that they were able to stay put and add the potential force for their 3-4 defense.
TWR Comparison -- DT, Marco Knight, St. Louis Rams
----------------------------------
2.17 -- OT, Calvin Gross, Texas A&M
Key Stats -- 21 yrs old, 6'5", 312 lbs, ~52 SPD, ~96 ACC, ~56 AGI, ~85 STR, ~86 JMP, ~88 PBK, ~81 RBK
Team Role -- Starter
Mortenson's Take -- The Vikings wanted to add a tackle this year and they managed to do that on draft day. They had targeted Gross early on in the draft process as someone they feel has a ton of potential, but held off on him in the 1st round because of the amount of tackles still left, as well as because the Vikings felt teams might shy away from him early due to the sketchy strength. The Vikings front office feels his explosiveness off the snap has the potential to knock DEs around in the NFC North for years to come.
TWR Comparison -- LT, Bob Nipper, New York Jets
----------------------------------
4.4 -- ROLB, Marcus Cameron, Stanford
TRADE ADDITION (via the Green Bay Packers for SS James Kendall and [7.17])
Key Stats -- 21 yrs old, 6'4", 257 lbs, ~85 SPD, ~81 ACC, ~84 AGI, ~65 CAT, ~71 STR, ~73 TAK, ~68 AWR
Team Role -- Depth
Mortenson's Take -- Cameron is a player that has the potential to be a great, but at worst should be a good player. The Vikings are stacked at linebacker but decided to go BPA at this pick and Cameron was just that. He has great size, great speed, and with a little kindness on the skew this guy could actually push ROLB Tony Foster for playing time. Chances are he has already pushed ROLB Isaiah Crosby, the Special Teams Captain for the Vikings for the last 4 seasons, off the roster completely.
TWR Comparison -- LOLB, Kurt Harper, Tennessee Titans
----------------------------------
4.17 -- QB, Tiki Carter, Air Force
Key Stats -- 21 yrs old, 6'4", 221 lbs, ~77 AWR, ~58 SPD, ~57 ACC, ~91 THP, ~81 THA
Team Role -- Development
Mortenson's Take -- Despite shopping QB Benjamin White this offseason, we are told by team sources that the Vikings remain committed to developing him if the right offer does not come along. White has seen little game action since being drafted, but that is largely due in part to being selected in the same class as franchise QB Antonio Page. With Page finally nearing the point where he can BE the veteran helping progress a young kid (rather than needing a veteran like QB Hakim Carrier help HIM along), expect the Vikings to look to get some of these kids reps. Carrier is entering the final year on the extension he signed last year and will likely be playing his last year for the Vikings. While Carrier will draw most of the starts, Page and Benjamin will get enough reps to attempt to gain bonus progression for the year. Tiki Carter, who entered the draft early and is just 21 years old, will likely redshirt this season while he finishes out his final commitments to the Air Force. He is a smart kid with a great arm and we expect him to be seeing extended playing time by next year, but perhaps earlier if Benjamin White ends up in another city sooner, rather than later.
TWR Comparison -- QB, Rich Nealy, Denver Broncos
----------------------------------
4.29 -- SS, Timmy Turner, Kansas
TRADE ADDITION (via the Arizona Cardinals for TE Josh Clay)
Key Stats -- 21 yrs old, 6'3", 228 lbs, ~89 SPD, ~88 ACC, ~84 AGI, ~67 CTH, ~83 TAK
Team Role -- Development
Mortenson's Take -- The Vikings needed to add depth to a secondary that struggled last year and they turned their 3rd string TE into a backup safety. Turner is far from skew proof, but he has a lot of the desired tools and Viking officials are very high on him. Expect him to be first off the bench in a busy deep backfield when SS Phil McAllister needs a rest.
TWR Comparison -- SS, O.J. Wheeler, Houston Texans
----------------------------------
6.17 -- CB, Jason Dudley, Montana
Key Stats -- 21 yrs old, 5'8", 185 lbs, ~92 SPD, ~91 ACC, ~86 AGI, ~60 CTH, ~93 JMP, ~64 AWR, ~75 TAK, ~60 CTH
Team Role -- Depth
Mortenson's Take -- Like most players drafted this late, the Vikings are just throwing a coin into the well and hoping for luck. The team obviously won't lean on Dudley much, but he does have some interesting tools that with some luck could turn him into a contributer. Dudley is a little guy, much to the mold of the retired Tampa 2 great CB Ronde Barber or even the guy he is replacing on the roster CB Scott Bender. Dudley is a great tackler and has a good chance of making a roster that currently only has four corners. Expect him to contribute on Special Teams if he makes the team.
TWR Comparison -- CB, Scott Bender, Minnesota Vikings
----------------------------------
-- WR, Tony Parkman, New York Giants
TRADE ADDITION (via the New York Giants for [3.17] & [5.17])
Key Stats -- 32 yrs old, 5'11", 190 lbs, ~98 SPD, ~99 ACC, ~92 AGI, ~96 CTH, ~93 AWR
Team Role -- Starter
Mortenson's Take -- Parkman has a career of winning, having spent his entire career in New York (between the Jets and Giants). Parkman, 32 years old, also won a Super Bowl with the Jets in 2013. Parkman, though his legs are not as young as they once were, remains one of the 4 fastest players in the league.
